A SECOND MONA LISA? WE'VE KNOWN ABOUT IT FOR 100 YEARS

A lot has been made in the past week about a "second Mona Lisa." Is it a Leonardo or not? The battle lines are forming. But, in reality, this painting is nothing new.

When doing my research for The Missing Piece, I came upon this article about it -- in the New York Times from February, 5 1914.

THE MISSING PIECE DOC TO HAVE U.S PREMIERE AT MILL VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL, OCTOBER 6, 2012

HOW IT STARTED

It all began in 1976 when I read this sentence in a book: "...On August 21, 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian mason, stole the picture to take to Italy." Ever since then I've been trying to find the truth about why he did what he did. This has led me on some amazing adventures, including meeting and becoming friends with the Peruggia family, especially his wonderful 86-year-old daughter Celestina. She didn't know much about her father so in my film we bring her truth about this elusive and strange man. And there's one thing I learned in doing all this -- there's a little bit of him in all of us.
